✧ Idle talk, raising the voice, and reciting poetry in the mosque

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ عَنِ ابْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَجْلَانَ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ قَالَ: كَانَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ يَقُولُ:

لَا تُكْثِرُوا اللَّغَطَ - يَعْنِي فِي الْمَسْجِدِ - قَالَ: فَدَخَلَ الْمَسْجِدَ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ فَإِذَا هُوَ بِرَجُلَيْنِ قَدِ ارْتَفَعَتْ أَصْوَاتُهُمَا فَبَادَرَاهُ فَأَدْرَكَ أَحَدَهُمَا فَضَرَبَهُ وَقَالَ: مِمَّنْ أَنْتَ ؟ قَالَ: مِنْ ثَقِيفَ قَالَ: إِنَّ مَسْجِدَنَا هَذَا لَا يُرْفَعُ فِيهِ الصَّوْتُ

Translation

✧ Do not make much idle talk - meaning in the mosque. He said: One day he entered the mosque and found two men whose voices had risen, so they rushed to him and he caught one of them and beat him and said: 'Who are you from?' He said: 'From Thaqif.' He said: 'In this mosque of ours the voice is not raised.'
