Translation

✧ In Kufa there was a man seeking the books of Daniel and that kind. A letter came from Umar b. al-Khattab that he be brought to him. The man said, "I do not know why I am being brought." When he came to Umar, he struck him with the whip. Then he began reciting to him, "Alif Lam Ra. These are the verses of the clear Book" until he reached "the heedless." He said: "I knew what he wanted." I said, "O Commander of the Faithful, leave me, for by God, I will not leave anything of those books in my possession but I will burn it." He said: Then he let him go.
