✧ Inheritance of the apostate

أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ أَبِي عَمْرٍو الشَّيْبَانِيِّ قَالَ:
أُتِيَ عَلِيٌّ بِشَيْخٍ كَانَ نَصْرَانِيًّا ثُمَّ أَسْلَمَ، ثُمَّ ارْتَدَّ عَنِ الْإِسْلَامِ. فَقَالَ لَهُ عَلِيٌّ: " لَعَلَّكَ إِنَّمَا ارْتَدَدْتَ لِأَنْ تُصِيبَ مِيرَاثًا، ثُمَّ تَرْجِعَ إِلَى الْإِسْلَامِ ". قَالَ: لَا، قَالَ: " فَلَعَلَّكَ خَطَبْتَ امْرَأَةً، فَأَبَوْا أَنْ يُنْكِحُوكَهَا فَأَرَدْتَ أَنْ تُزَوَّجَهَا ثُمَّ تَرْجِعَ إِلَى الْإِسْلَامِ ؟ " قَالَ: لَا. قَالَ: " فَارْجِعْ إِلَى الْإِسْلَامِ " ! قَالَ: أَمَا حَتَّى أَلْقَى الْمَسِيحَ فَلَا ! فَأَمَرَ بِهِ عَلِيٌّ فَضُرِبَتْ عُنُقُهُ، وَدُفِعَ مِيرَاثُهُ إِلَى وَلَدِهِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ
Translation
✧ Ali was brought an old man who had been a Christian, then embraced Islam, then apostatized from Islam. Ali said to him: "Perhaps you apostatized only to obtain an inheritance, then to return to Islam." He said: "No." He said: "Perhaps you proposed to a woman and they refused to marry her to you, and you wanted them to give her to you in marriage, then to return to Islam?" He said: "No." He said: "Then return to Islam!" He said: "Not until I meet the Messiah!" So Ali ordered that he be executed, and his inheritance was given to his Muslim children.
