أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنْ حُصَيْنِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مَيْمُونٍ الْأَوْدِيِّ قَالَ:
سَمِعْتُ عُمَرَ قَبْلَ قَتْلِهِ بِأَرْبَعٍ، وَهُوَ وَاقِفٌ عَلَى رَاحِلَتِهِ عَلَى حُذَيْفَةَ بْنِ الْيَمَانِ وَعُثْمَانَ بْنِ حُنَيْفٍ، فَقَالَ: انْظُرَا مَا قِبَلَكُمَا أَلَّا تَكُونَا حَمَّلْتُمَا الْأَرْضَ مَا لَا تُطِيقُ ! فَقَالَ حُذَيْفَةُ: " حَمَّلْنَا الْأَرْضَ أَمْرًا هِيَ لَهُ مُطِيقَةٌ، وَقَدْ تَرَكْتُ لَهُمْ مِثْلَ الَّذِي أَخَذْتُ مِنْهُمْ ". وَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ حُنَيْفٍ: " حَمَّلْتُ الْأَرْضَ أَمْرًا هِيَ لَهُ مُطِيقَةٌ، وَقَدْ تَرَكْتُ لَهُمْ فَضْلًا يَسِيرًا ". فَقَالَ: " انْظُرَا مَا قِبَلَكُمَا أَلَّا تَكُونَا حَمَّلْتُمَا الْأَرْضَ مَا لَا تُطِيقُ؛ فَإِنِ اللهُ سَلَّمَنِي لَأَدَعَنَّ أَرَامِلَ أَهْلِ الْعِرَاقِ وَهُنَّ لَا يَحْتَجْنَ إِلَى أَحَدٍ بَعْدِي
Translation
✧ I heard Umar four days before he was killed, while he was standing by his mount, say to Hudhayfa b. al-Yaman and Uthman b. Hunayf: "Look into what you have before you, lest you have burdened the land with more than it can bear!" Hudhayfa said: "We have burdened the land with a matter it can bear, and I have left them the like of what I took from them." Uthman b. Hunayf said: "I have burdened the land with a matter it can bear, and I have left them a small surplus." He said: "Look into what you have before you, lest you have burdened the land with more than it can bear; for if God preserves me, I shall leave the widows of Iraq in no need of anyone after me."
