أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ:

أَنَّ رَجُلًا مِنْ أَهْلِ نَجْرَانَ أَسْلَمَ، فَأَرَادُوا أَنْ يَأْخُذُوا يَعْنِي مِنْهُ جِزْيَةً أَوْ كَمَا قَالَ، فَأَبَى، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ: إِنَّمَا أَنْتَ مُتَعَوِّذٌ. فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ: إِنَّ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ لَمَعَاذًا إِنْ فَعَلْتُ ! فَقَالَ عُمَرُ: " صَدَقْتَ، وَاللهِ إِنَّ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ لَمَعَاذًا

Translation

✧ A man from the people of Najran became Muslim, and they wanted to take from him—meaning jizya, or as he said—and he refused. 'Umar b. al-Khattab said: "You are only seeking refuge." The man said: "In Islam there is indeed a refuge if I do that!" 'Umar said: "You have spoken the truth, by God; in Islam there is indeed a refuge."
