أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ،

أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ، خَرَجَ فَمَرَّ عَلَى نَاسٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ، فِيهِمْ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ، فَقَالَ: مَا أَدْرِي مَا أَصْنَعُ فِي هَؤُلَاءِ الْقَوْمِ الَّذِينَ لَيْسُوا مِنَ الْعَرَبِ، وَلَا مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ ؟ يَعْنِي الْمَجُوسَ. فَقَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ: أَشْهَدُ لَسَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: سُنُّوا بِهِمْ سُنَّةَ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ

Translation

✧ ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb went out and passed by some of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, among them ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf. He said: I do not know what to do about these people who are neither Arabs nor People of the Book—meaning the Magians. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf said: I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: "Treat them according to the practice of the People of the Book."
