✧ Demolishing their churches and whether they may strike the naqus

أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مَيْمُونِ بْنِ مِهْرَانَ، قَالَ:
كَتَبَ عُمَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ أَنْ " يُمْنَعَ النَّصَارَى بِالشَّامِ أَنْ يَضْرِبُوا نَاقُوسًا. قَالَ: " وَيُنْهَوْا أَنْ يَفْرُقُوا رُءُوسَهُمْ، وَيَجُزُّوا نَوَاصِيَهُمْ، وَيَشُدُّوا مَنَاطِقَهُمْ، وَلَا يَرْكَبُوا عَلَى سَرْجٍ، وَلَا يَلْبَسُوا عَصْبًا، وَلَا يَرْفَعُوا صُلُبَهُمْ فَوْقَ كَنَائِسِهِمْ. فَإِنْ قَدَرُوا عَلَى أَحَدٍ مِنْهُمْ فَعَلَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ شَيْئًا بَعْدَ التَّقَدُّمِ إِلَيْهِ، فَإِنَّ سَلَبَهُ لِمَنْ وَجَدَهُ ". قَالَ: " وَكَتَبَ أَنْ يُمْنَعَ نِسَاءُهُمْ أَنْ يَرْكَبْنَ الرَّحَائِلَ ". قَالَ عَمْرُو بْنُ مَيْمُونٍ: وَاسْتَشَارَنِي عُمَرُ فِي هَدْمِ كَنَائِسِهِمْ، فَقُلْتُ: " لَا تُهْدَمُ، هَذَا مَا صُولِحُوا عَلَيْهِ "، فَتَرَكَهَا عُمَرُ
Translation
✧ Umar b. Abd al-Aziz wrote that the Christians in Syria be prevented from striking the naqus. He said: 'And they are to be forbidden from parting their hair, cutting their forelocks, tightening their belts, riding on saddles, wearing turbans, and raising their crosses above their churches. If any of them is caught doing any of that after being warned, his belongings are for the one who finds him.' He said: 'And he wrote that their women be prevented from riding on pack saddles.' Amr b. Maymun said: Umar consulted me about demolishing their churches, and I said: 'Do not demolish them; this is what they were granted by treaty,' so Umar left them.
