كَانَ أَصْحَابُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَنَامُونَ ثُمَّ يَقُومُونَ فَيُصَلُّونَ وَلاَ يَتَوَضَّئُونَ

machine translationAbū ʿĪsā said: This ḥadīth is good and authentic (ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ). He said: I heard Ṣāliḥ b. ʿAbdillāh say: I asked ʿAbdullāh b. al-Mubārak about someone who sleeps sitting, leaning on something. He said: No wuḍūʾ is required of him. Abū ʿĪsā said: The ḥadīth of Ibn ʿAbbās was narrated by Saʿīd b. Abī ʿArūbah, from Qatādah, from Ibn ʿAbbās as his own statement; he did not mention Abū al-ʿĀliyah in it and did not trace it back to the Prophet (he did not raise it, marfūʿ). The scholars differed regarding wuḍūʾ after sleep. Most of them held that wuḍūʾ is not obligatory for him if he sleeps sitting or standing, until he sleeps lying on his side. This is what al-Thawrī, Ibn al-Mubārak and Aḥmad say. He said: Some of them said: If he sleeps until his mind is overcome, wuḍūʾ becomes obligatory for him. This is what Isḥāq says. Al-Shāfiʿī said: Whoever sleeps sitting and sees a dream, or his seat shifts due to the drowsiness of sleep, must perform wuḍūʾ.
