قَدْ كَانَ يَكُونُ فِي الأُمَمِ مُحَدَّثُونَ فَإِنْ يَكُ فِي أُمَّتِي أَحَدٌ فَعُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ

Notes
machine translationAbū ʿĪsā said: This is a good and sound (ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ) hadith. And some of the companions of Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah informed me, saying: Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah said: "Muḥaddathūn" means those who are given understanding (mufahhamūn).

machine translationSaʿd b. Ibrāhīm narrates it, and there is disagreement about him. Zakariyyā b. Abī Zāʾidah narrated it from Saʿd, and there is also disagreement about Zakariyyā: Dāwūd b. ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd and Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm b. Rajāʾ narrated it from Zakariyyā, from Saʿd, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah, while Isḥāq al-Azraq contradicted them and narrated it from Zakariyyā, from Saʿd, from Abū Salamah as a mursal report. There is also disagreement about Ibrāhīm b. Saʿd: Abū Marwān al-ʿUthmānī and Sulaymān b. Dāwūd al-Hāshimī al-Wirkānī narrated it from Ibrāhīm b. Saʿd, from his father, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah. Ibn Wahb narrated it from Ibrāhīm, from his father, from Abū Salamah, from ʿĀʾishah, may God be pleased with her. Ibn al-Hād narrated it from Ibrāhīm b. Saʿd, from his father, from Abū Salamah as a mursal report. Ibn ʿAjlān narrated it from Saʿd b. Ibrāhīm, from Abū Salamah, from ʿĀʾishah, may God be pleased with her; al-Layth and Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān narrated it from him. Muʾammal b. Ismāʿīl narrated it from Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān and made a grave error regarding its chain, for he narrated it from Yaḥyā, from Muḥammad b. ʿAmr, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah, whereas Yaḥyā only narrated it from Ibn ʿAjlān, from Saʿd, from Abū Salamah, from ʿĀʾishah, may God be pleased with her.
