"I asked the Messenger of Allah: 'O Messenger of Allah! Which is the most virtuous of deeds?' He said: 'Salat during its appropriate time.' I said: 'Then what, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'Being dutiful to one's parents.' I said: 'Then what, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'Jihad in the cause of Allah.' Then the messenger of Allah was silent, and if I had asked him more, he would have told me more.'"

machine translationHe was asked about the hadith of Abū ʿAmr al-Shaybānī, from Ibn Masʿūd, from the Prophet ﷺ: "The best of deeds is the prayer at its time." He said: It is narrated by al-Walīd b. al-ʿAyzār, al-Ḥasan b. ʿUbaydillāh, Abū Muʿāwiyah ʿAmr b. ʿAbdillāh al-Nakhaʿī (who is the father of Abū Dāwūd al-Nakhaʿī), Sulaymān al-Aʿmash, and Bayān b. Bishr. There is disagreement about al-Walīd b. al-ʿAyzār regarding the wording of the hadith, and disagreement about Bayān regarding its chain. ʿUbayd al-Muktib narrated it from Abū ʿAmr al-Shaybānī, from a man whom he did not name. As for the disagreement about al-Walīd b. al-ʿAyzār: ʿUthmān b. ʿUmar narrated it from Mālik b. Mighwal, from him, and said in it: "The best of deeds is the prayer at the beginning of its time." Likewise ʿAlī b. Ḥafṣ al-Madāʾinī said, from Shuʿbah, from al-Walīd b. al-ʿAyzār. Likewise al-Maʿmarī said, from Abū Mūsā, from Ghundar, from Shuʿbah, from ʿUbayd al-Muktib. Abū Nuʿaym said in the hadith of ʿAmr b. ʿAbdillāh, from Abū ʿAmr al-Shaybānī: "That the people be safe from your tongue and your hand." Abū Nuʿaym alone reported this wording in this hadith. As for Bayān, Abū Saʿīd al-Juʿfī Yaḥyā b. Sulaymān narrated it from Ibn Fuḍayl, from him, from Abū ʿAmr al-Shaybānī, from Ibn Masʿūd, with a connected chain; others narrated it from Ibn Fuḍayl as a mursal report and did not mention Ibn Masʿūd in it. It is sound from Abū ʿAmr al-Shaybānī, from Ibn Masʿūd. (Abū Dāwūd)
