حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ أنا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ أنا الثَّوْرِيُّ عَنْ أَبِي قَيْسٍ عَنْ هُزَيْلِ بْنِ شُرَحْبِيلَ قَالَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ فَقَالَ
لَهُ كَانَ لِي عَبْدٌ فَأَعْتَقْتُهُ وَجَعَلْتُهُ سَائِبَةً فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ اللهِ إِنَّ أَهْلَ الْإِسْلَامِ لَا يُسَيِّبُونَ إِنَّمَا كَانَتْ تُسَيِّبُ أَهْلُ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ وَأَنْتَ وَلِيُّ نِعْمَتِهِ وَأَوْلَى النَّاسِ بِمِيرَاثِهِ فَإِنْ تَحَرَّجْتَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ فَأَرِنَاهُ نَجْعَلْهُ فِي بَيْتِ الْمَالِ

✧ He said: 'I had a slave, so I freed him and made him a sāʾibah for the sake of God.' ʿAbd Allāh said to him: 'The people of Islam do not set slaves free as sāʾibah; only the people of the Jāhiliyyah used to do that. You are the patron of his favor and the most entitled of people to his inheritance. If you feel uneasy about anything, show it to us and we will place it in the public treasury.'
