أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الصَّائِغُ ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ ثنا هُشَيْمٌ أنا أَبُو جَنَابٍ الْكَلْبِيُّ عَنْ بُكَيْرِ بْنِ الْأَخْنَسِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ
امْتَرَيْنَا فِي قِرَاءَةِ هَذَا الْحَرْفِ {وَيَعْلَمُ مَا تَفْعَلُونَ} أَوْ تَفْعَلُونَ؟ فَأَتَيْتُ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ لِأَسْأَلَهُ عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَبَيْنَا أَنَا عِنْدَهُ إِذْ أَتَاهُ آتٍ فَقَالَ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ رَجُلٌ أَصَابَ مِنِ امْرَأَتِهِ فُجُورًا ثُمَّ تَابَا وَأَصْلَحَا فَتَلَا عَبْدُ اللهِ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ {وَهُوَ الَّذِي يَقْبَلُ التَّوْبَةَ عَنْ عِبَادِهِ وَيَعْفُو عَنِ السَّيِّئَاتِ وَيَعْلَمُ مَا تَفْعَلُونَ}

✧ We disagreed about the recitation of this letter: {And He knows what you do} or do you do? So I came to Ibn Mas'ud to ask him about that. While I was with him, a man came to him and said: "O Abu 'Abd al-Rahman, a man committed adultery with his wife, then they repented and made amends." So 'Abdullah recited this verse: {And He is the One who accepts repentance from His servants and pardons misdeeds, and He knows what you do}.
