حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ النَّضْرِ الْأَزْدِيُّ ثنا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو ثنا زُهَيْرٌ ثنا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ أَبِي الْأَحْوَصِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ
«إِنَّمَا جُعِلَ الْإِمَامُ لِيُؤْتَمَّ بِهِ فَإِذَا رَكَعَ فَارْكَعُوا وَإِذَا رَفَعَ فَارْفَعُوا وَلَا تَسْبِقُوهُ إِذَا رَكَعَ وَلَا إِذَا رَفَعَ وَلَا إِذَا سَجَدَ فَإِنْ كُنْتُمْ إِنَّمَا بِكُمْ أَنْ تُدْرِكُوا مَا سَبَقَكُمْ بِهِ فَإِنَّهُ يَسْجُدُ قَبْلَكُمْ وَيَرْفَعُ قَبْلَكُمْ فَتُدْرِكُوا ذَلِكَ»

✧ The imam is appointed only to be followed. When he bows, bow; when he rises, rise. Do not get ahead of him when he bows, nor when he rises, nor when he prostrates. If you are concerned about catching up with what he has preceded you in, then he prostrates before you and rises before you, so you will catch up with that.
