حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثنا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ثنا عَبْدُ السَّلَامِ بْنُ حَرْبٍ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ عَنْ عَرْفَجَةَ
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَرَأَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ {بَلْ تُؤْثِرُونَ الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا} فَقَالَ «هَلْ تَدْرِي بِأَيِّ شَيْءٍ ابْتَدَأَ الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا؟ لِأَيِّ شَيْءٍ آثَرَ بِالْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا؟ عُجِّلَتْ لَنَا الدُّنْيَا وَأُوتِينَا لَذَّتَهَا وَبَهْجَتَهَا وَغُيِّبَتْ عَنَّا الْآخِرَةُ وَزُوِيَتْ عَنَّا فَأَجَبْنَا الْعَاجِلَ وَتَرَكْنَا الْآجِلَ»

✧ From Abdullah, he recited this verse: {But you prefer the worldly life}. Then he said: "Do you know by what thing the worldly life began? For what thing did it prefer the worldly life? The world was hastened for us, and we were given its pleasure and its splendor, while the Hereafter was hidden from us and withheld from us. So we answered the immediate and abandoned the delayed."
