✧ On the authority of Abū Rāfiʿ, the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said: I was a servant of al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib. I had accepted Islam, Umm al-Faḍl had accepted Islam, and al-ʿAbbās had accepted Islam, but he concealed his Islam out of fear of his people. Abū Lahab had stayed behind from Badr and sent al-ʿĀṣ b. Hishām in his place, for he owed him a debt. He said to him: “Suffice for me in this campaign, and I will leave for you what you owe me.” So he did. When the news came and Allah humiliated Abū Lahab, I—being a weak man—was carving these wooden bowls in a chamber. By Allah, I was sitting in the chamber carving my bowls, with Umm al-Faḍl near me, when the wicked Abū Lahab came dragging his feet—I think he said—until he sat by the chamber’s rope, with his back to my back. The people said: “This is Abū Sufyān b. al-Ḥārith.” Abū Lahab said: “Come to me, O son of my brother.” Abū Sufyān came and sat with him, and the people came and stood over them. He said: “O son of my brother, how were the affairs of the people?” He replied: “Nothing, by Allah. It was only that when we met them, we offered them our shoulders; they killed us as they wished and took us captive as they wished. By Allah, I do not blame the people.” He said: “And why?” He replied: “I saw white men on piebald horses—by Allah, nothing withstands them, and nothing can stand before them.” He said: I raised the chamber’s rope and said: “Those, by Allah, are the angels.” Abū Lahab raised his hand and slapped my face. I sprang at him, but he overpowered me and threw me to the ground, then he got on top of me. Umm al-Faḍl stood up, tucked up her garment, took a pillar from the chamber’s pillars, and struck him with it, splitting open a severe wound in his head. She said: “O enemy of Allah, have you deemed him weak because you saw his master absent from him?” He rose humiliated. By Allah, he lived only seven nights until Allah struck him with the ‘adasa (plague) and it killed him. His two sons left him for two or three nights without burying him until he stank. A man of Quraysh said to his two sons: “Are you not ashamed? Your father has stunk in his house.” They replied: “We fear this ulcer—’al-‘adasa’—for Quraysh used to fear the ‘adasa’ as they feared the plague.” A man said: “Go, and I will be with you.” He said: By Allah, they did not wash him except by throwing water on him from a distance. Then they carried him and threw him to the top of Makkah against a wall, and threw stones upon him.
