حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثنا عَارِمٌ أَبُو النُّعْمَانِ ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ عَنْ عَاصِمٍ عَنْ زِرِّ قَالَ
كُنْتُ آخَذُ عَلَى عَبْدِ اللهِ الْمُصْحَفَ فَأُتِيَ عَلَى هَذِهِ الْآيَةِ {وَجَعَلَ لَكُمْ مِنْ أَزْوَاجِكُمْ بَنِينَ وَحَفَدَةً} فَقَالَ لِي عَبْدُ اللهِ «أَتَدْرِي مَا الْحَفَدَةُ؟» قُلْتُ حَشَمُ الرَّجُلِ قَالَ «لَا هُمُ الْأَخْتَانُ»

✧ I used to hold the mushaf for ʿAbd Allah. When he came to this verse: {And He has made for you from your spouses sons and hafada}, ʿAbd Allah said to me: “Do you know what al-hafada are?” I said, “A man’s servants.” He said, “No, they are the akhtān (in-laws).”
