حَدَّثَنَا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ الْأَسْفَاطِيٌّ وَأَبُو خَلِيفَةَ قَالَا ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ ثنا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ حَارِثَةَ بْنِ مُضَرِّبٍ أَنَّهُ أَتَى عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ مَسْعُودٍ فَقَالَ مَا بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ أَحَدٍ مِنَ الْعَرَبِ إِحْنَةٌ وَإِنِّي مَرَرْتُ بِمَسْجِدٍ لِبَنِي حَنِيفَةَ فَإِذَا هُمْ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِمُسَيْلِمَةَ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِمْ عَبْدُ اللهِ فَجِيءَ بِهِمْ فَاسْتَتَابَهُمْ غَيْرَ ابْنِ النَّوَّاحَةِ فَقَالَ لَهُ
سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «لَوْلَا أَنَّكَ رَسُولٌ لَضَرَبْتُ عُنُقَكَ» فَأَنْتَ الْيَوْمَ لَيْسَ بِرَسُولٍ فَأَمَرَ قَرَظَةَ بْنَ كَعْبٍ فَضَرَبَ عُنُقَهُ فِي السُّوقِ ثُمَّ قَالَ مَنْ أَرَادَ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَى ابْنِ النَّوَّاحَةِ قَتِيلًا بِالسُّوقِ

✧ I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: “Were it not that you are a messenger, I would strike your neck.” So today you are not a messenger. Then he ordered Qaraẓah b. Kaʿb, and he struck his neck in the market. Then he said: “Whoever wants to look at Ibn al-Nawwāḥah killed in the market.”
