حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثنا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ثنا الْمَسْعُودِيُّ عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ قَالَ
قَدِمَ عَبْدُ اللهِ وَقَدْ بَنَى سَعْدٌ الْقَصْرَ وَاتَّخَذَ مَسْجِدًا فِي أَصْحَابِ التَّمْرِ فَكَانَ يَخْرُجُ إِلَيْهِ فِي الصَّلَوَاتِ فَلَمَّا وَلِيَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بَيْتَ الْمَالِ نَقَبَ بَيْتَ الْمَالِ فَأَخَذَ الرَّجُلَ فَكَتَبَ عَبْدُ اللهِ إِلَى عُمَرَ فَكَتَبَ عُمَرُ «أَنْ لَا تَقْطَعْهُ وَانْقُلِ الْمَسْجِدَ وَاجْعَلْ بَيْتَ الْمَالِ مِمَّا يَلِي الْقِبْلَةَ فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَزَالُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ مَنْ يُصَلِّي» فَنَقَلَهُ عَبْدُ اللهِ وَخَطَّ هَذِهِ الْخُطَّةَ وَكَانَ الْقَصْرُ الَّذِي بَنَى سَعْدٌ شَاذَرَ وَإِنْ كَانَ الْإِمَامُ يَقُومُ عَلَيْهِ «فَأَمَرَ بِهِ عَبْدُ اللهِ فَنُقِضَ حَتَّى اسْتَوَى مَقَامُ الْإِمَامِ مَعَ النَّاسِ»

✧ ʿAbd Allah arrived after Saʿd had built the palace and had made a mosque among the date-palm growers; he used to go out to it for the prayers. When ʿAbd Allah was put in charge of the treasury, someone made a breach in the treasury and the man was caught. ʿAbd Allah wrote to ʿUmar, and ʿUmar wrote back: “Do not cut off his hand, but move the mosque and put the treasury on the side facing the qiblah, for there is always someone in the mosque praying.” So ʿAbd Allah moved it and drew this plan. The palace that Saʿd had built was a shadhara, and when the imam stood upon it, ʿAbd Allah ordered it demolished until the imam’s standing place was level with the people.
