حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثنا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ثنا الْأَعْمَشُ عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ قَالَ
كُنَّا جُلُوسًا عِنْدَ عَبْدِ اللهِ فَذَكَرَ الْقَوْمُ رَجُلًا فَذَكَرُوا مِنْ خُلُقِهِ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ «أَرَأَيْتُمْ لَوْ قَطَعْتُمْ رَأْسَهُ أَكُنْتُمْ تَسْتَطِيعُونَ أَنْ تُعِيدُوهُ؟» قَالُوا لَا قَالَ «فَيَدَهُ؟» قَالُوا لَا قَالَ «فَرِجْلَهُ؟» قَالُوا لَا قَالَ «فَإِنَّكُمْ لَنْ تَسْتَطِيعُوا أَنْ تُغَيِّرُوا خُلُقَهُ حَتَّى تُغَيِّرُوا خَلْقَهُ إِنَّ النُّطْفَةَ لَتَسْتَقِرُّ فِي الرَّحِمِ أَرْبَعِينَ لَيْلَةً ثُمَّ تَنْحَدِرُ دَمًا ثُمَّ تَكُونُ عَلَقَةً ثُمَّ تَكُونُ مُضْغَةً ثُمَّ يُبْعَثُ إِلَيْهِ الْمَلَكُ فَيَكْتُبُ رِزْقَهُ وَخُلُقَهُ وَشَقِيٌّ أَوْ سَعِيدٌ»

✧ We were sitting with ʿAbd Allah when the people mentioned a man and spoke of his character. ʿAbd Allah said, "Do you think that if you cut off his head you could restore it?" They said, "No." He said, "His hand?" They said, "No." He said, "His leg?" They said, "No." He said, "You will never be able to change his character until you change his physical creation. The drop of semen settles in the womb for forty nights, then descends as blood, then becomes a clot, then becomes a lump of flesh. Then the angel is sent to it and writes down its provision, its character, and whether it is wretched or blessed."
