حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ بْنِ أَبَانَ ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْمُحَارِبِيُّ عَنْ رَقَبَةَ بْنِ مَصْقَلَةَ الْعَبْدِيِّ عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ أَبِي النَّجُودِ عَنْ زِرِّ بْنِ حُبَيْشٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ
«لَقَدْ أَحْبَبْتُ عُمَرَ حَتَّى لَقَدْ خِفْتُ اللهَ وَلَوْ أَعْلَمُ أَنَّ كَلْبًا يُحِبُّ عُمَرَ لَأَحْبَبْتُهُ وَلَوَدِدْتُ أَنِّي كُنْتُ خَادِمًا لِعُمَرَ ؓ وَلَقَدْ وَجَدَ فَقْدَهُ كُلُّ شَيْءٍ حَتَّى الْعِضَاهَ وَإِنَّ هِجْرَتَهُ كَانَتْ نَصْرًا وَإِنَّ سُلْطَانَهُ كَانَ رَحْمَةً»

✧ I loved ʿUmar so much that I feared God, and if I knew that a dog loved ʿUmar, I would love it. I wish I had been a servant to ʿUmar ؓ. Everything felt his loss, even the thorny trees. His migration was a victory, and his authority was a mercy.
