حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ حَفْصٍ السَّدُوسِيُّ ثنا عَاصِمُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ ثنا الْمَسْعُودِيُّ عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ كُهَيْلٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ قَالَ قَالَ

عَبْدُ اللهِ «لَا يَكُونُ أَحَدُكُمْ إِمَّعَةً» قَالُوا وَمَا الْإِمَّعَةُ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ؟ قَالَ يَقُولُ «إِنَّمَا أَنَا مَعَ النَّاسِ إِنِ اهْتَدَوُا اهْتَدَيْتُ وَإِنْ ضَلُّوا ضَلَلْتُ أَلَا لَيُوَطِّنُ أَحَدُكُمْ نَفْسَهُ عَلَى إِنْ كَفَرَ النَّاسُ أَنْ لَا يَكْفُرَ»

✧ ʿAbd Allāh said: “None of you should be an immaʿa (one who blindly follows others).” They said, “What is an immaʿa, O Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān?” He said, “He says, ‘I am only with the people: if they are guided, I am guided; and if they go astray, I go astray.’ Indeed, let each of you resolve in himself that even if the people disbelieve, he will not disbelieve.”
