حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الدَّبَرِيُّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّزَّاقِ عَنِ الثَّوْرِيِّ عَنْ جَابِرٍ وَغَيْرِهِ عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ وَشُتَيْرِ بْنِ شَكَلٍ الْعَبْسِيُّ قَالَ

جَلَسْنَا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَثَارَ إِلَيْهِمَا النَّاسُ فَقَالَ أَحَدُهُمَا لِصَاحِبِهِ إِنَّهُمْ لَمْ يَقُومُوا إِلَيْنَا إِلَّا لِنُحَدِّثَهُمْ فَإِمَّا أَنْ أُحَدِّثَهُمْ وَتُصَدِّقَنِي وَإِمَّا أَنْ تُحَدِّثَهُمْ فَأُصَدِّقَكَ فَقَالَ أَحَدُهُمَا سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ يَقُولُ «أَعْظَمُ آيَةٍ فِي الْقُرْآنِ آيَةُ الْكُرْسِيِّ» فَقَالَ الْآخَرُ صَدَقْتَ قَالَ الْآخَرُ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ يَقُولُ أَجْمَعُ آيَةٍ فِي الْقُرْآنِ {إِنَّ اللهَ يَأْمُرُ بِالْعَدْلِ وَالْإِحْسَانِ} قَالَ صَدَقْتَ قَالَ وَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ أَشَدُّ آيَةٍ فِي الْقُرْآنِ تَفْوِيضًا {وَمَنْ يَتَّقِ اللهَ يَجْعَلْ لَهُ مَخْرَجًا} قَالَ صَدَقْتَ قَالَ الْآخَرُ وَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ أَكْبَرُ آيَةٍ فِي الْقُرْآنِ فَرَحًا {يَا عِبَادِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا عَلَى أَنْفُسِهِمْ} قَالَ صَدَقْتَ

✧ We sat in the mosque, and the people surged toward the two of them. One of them said to his companion: They only stood up to us so that we narrate to them. Either I narrate to them and you confirm me, or you narrate and I confirm you. One of them said: I heard Abdullah say: "The greatest verse in the Quran is the Verse of the Throne." The other said: You have spoken the truth. The other said: I heard Abdullah say: The most comprehensive verse in the Quran is {Indeed Allah commands justice and excellence}. He said: You have spoken the truth. He said: And I heard him say: The verse in the Quran conveying the greatest reliance is {And whoever fears Allah, He will make for him a way out}. He said: You have spoken the truth. The other said: And I heard him say: The greatest verse in the Quran in bringing joy is {O My servants who have transgressed against themselves}. He said: You have spoken the truth.
