حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمِنْهَالِ حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ مُؤَذِّنُ مَسْجِدِ جَرَادَانَ عَنْ عُدَيْسَةَ بِنْتِ أُهْبَانَ بْنِ صَيْفِيٍّ قَالَتْ
لَمَّا قَدِمَ عَلِيٌّ ؓ الْبَصْرَةَ جَاءَنَا إِلَى الْمَنْزِلِ فَقَالَ هَهُنَا أَبُو مُسْلِمٍ؟ فَقُلْنَا نَعَمْ فَخَرَجَ إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ عَلِيٌّ أَلَا تُعِينُنَا عَلَى هَذَا الْأَمْرِ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ يَا جَارِيَةُ ائْتِينِي بِذَاكَ السَّيْفِ فَجَاءَتْ بِسَيْفِهِ فَسَلَّهُ فَإِذَا سَيْفٌ مِنْ خَشَبٍ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو مُسْلِمٍ إِنَّ ابْنَ عَمِّكَ يَعْنِي النَّبِيَّ ﷺ عَهِدَ إِلَيَّ إِذَا كَانَتْ فِتْنَةٌ بَيْنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ أَنْ أَتَّخِذَ سَيْفًا مِنْ خَشَبٍ فَوَلَّى عَلَيٌّ غَضْبَانَ فَقَالَ لَيْسَ لَنَا فِيكَ حَاجَةٌ وَلَا فِي سَيْفِكَ قَالَ يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ فَحَدَّثَنِي يُونُسُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثَ عَنْ هَذَا الشَّيْخِ قَبْلَ أَنْ أَلْقَاهُ

✧ When Ali ؓ came to Basra, he came to us at the house and said, 'Is Abu Muslim here?' We said, 'Yes.' He came out to him, and Ali said to him, 'Will you not help us in this matter?' He said, 'Yes. O slave girl, bring me that sword.' She brought his sword, and he unsheathed it, and it was a sword of wood. Abu Muslim said to him, 'Your cousin, meaning the Prophet ﷺ, enjoined upon me that if there is a trial among the Muslims, I should take a sword of wood.' Ali turned away angry and said, 'We have no need of you or your sword.' Yazid b. Zuray' said: Yunus b. Ubayd narrated this hadith to me from this shaykh before I met him.
