حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ حَفْصٍ السَّدُوسِيُّ ثنا عَاصِمُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ ثنا الْمَسْعُودِيُّ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ بَذِيمَةَ عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ حَبْتَرٍ قَالَ قَالَ
عَبْدُ اللهِ يَا حَبَّذَا الْمَكْرُوهَانِ الْمَوْتُ وَالْفَقْرُ وَايْمُ اللهِ أَلَا إِنَّ الْغِنَى وَالْفَقْرَ وَمَا أُبَالِي بِأَيِّهِمَا ابْتُلِيتُ إِنْ كَانَ الْغِنَى إِنَّ فِيهِ لِلْعَطْفِ وَإِنْ كَانَ الْفَقْرُ إِنَّ فِيهِ لِلصَّبْرِ

✧ ʿAbdullah said: "How excellent are the two detested things: death and poverty. By Allah, indeed wealth and poverty—I do not care with which of them I am tested. If it is wealth, indeed in it there is compassion; and if it is poverty, indeed in it there is patience."
