حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى بْنِ مُعَاذٍ ثنا أَبِي ثنا ابْنُ عَوْنٍ حَدَّثَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ قَيْسٍ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُرَحْبِيلَ أَوِ ابْنِ شَرَاحِيلَ أَبُو مَيْسَرَةَ الْهَمْدَانِيُّ قَالَ أَتَى عَلَيَّ رَجُلٌ وَأَنَا أُصَلِّي فَقَالَ
أَلَا أَرَاكَ تُصَلِّي وَقَدْ أُمِرَ بِكِتَابِ اللهِ فَمُزِّقَ فَتَجَوَّزْتُ فِي صَلَاتِي وَكُنْتُ لَا أُحْبِسُ فَدَخَلْتُ الدَّارَ وَلَمْ أُحْبَسْ وَرَقِيتُ فَلَمْ أُحْبَسْ فَإِذَا أَنَا بِالْأَشْعَرِيِّ وَحُذَيْفَةَ وَابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ يَتَقَاوَلَانِ وَحُذَيْفَةُ يَقُولُ لِابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ادْفَعْ إِلَيْهِمْ هَذَا الْمُصْحَفَ قَالَ لَا وَاللهِ لَا أَدْفَعُهُ إِلَيْهِمْ «أَقْرَأَنِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِضْعًا وَسَبْعِينَ مَرَّةً ثُمَّ أَدْفَعُهُ إِلَيْهِمْ وَاللهِ لَا أَدْفَعُهُ إِلَيْهِمْ»

✧ “Do I not see you praying when the Book of Allah has been ordered and then torn apart? So I prayed hastily, and I was not detained. I entered the house and was not detained. I climbed up and was not detained. Then I found al-Ashʿari, Hudhayfah, and Ibn Masʿud disputing, with Hudhayfah saying to Ibn Masʿud, ‘Hand over this codex to them.’ He said, ‘No, by Allah, I will not hand it over to them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me to recite it more than seventy times, and then I should hand it over to them? By Allah, I will not hand it over to them.’”
