حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الْخَلَّالُ الْمَكِّيُّ ثنا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ ثنا هِشَامُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ رَافِعٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَعِيدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ عَنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةَ قَالَ قَالَ

عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي الْعَاصِ وَكَانَ شَابًّا وَفَدْنَا عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَوَجَدَنِي أَفْضَلَهُمْ أَخْذًا لِلْقُرْآنِ وَقَدْ فَضَلْتُهُمْ بِسُورَةِ الْبَقَرَةِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «قَدْ أَمَّرْتُكَ عَلَى أَصْحَابِكَ وَأَنْتَ أَصْغَرُهُمْ فَإِذَا أَمَمْتَ قَوْمًا فَأُمَّهُمْ بِأَضْعَفِهِمْ فَإِنَّ وَرَاءَكَ الْكَبِيرَ وَالصَّغِيرَ وَالضَّعِيفَ وَذَا الْحَاجَةِ وَإِذَا كُنْتَ مُصَدِّقًا فَلَا تَأْخُذِ الشَّافِعَ وَهِي الْمَاخِضُ وَلَا الرُّبَّى وَلَا فَحْلَ الْغَنَمِ وَحَزْرَةُ الرَّجُلِ هُوَ أَحَقُّ بِهَا مِنْكَ وَلَا تَمَسَّ الْقُرْآنَ إِلَّا وَأَنْتَ طَاهِرٌ واعْلَمْ أَنَّ الْعُمْرَةَ هِي الْحَجُّ الْأَصْغَرُ وَأَنَّ عُمْرَةً خَيْرٌ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا وَمَا فِيهَا وَحَجَّةٌ خَيْرٌ مِنْ عُمْرَةٍ»

✧ ʿUthmān b. Abī al-ʿĀṣ, and he was a young man: We came as a delegation to the Prophet ﷺ, and he found me the best of them in taking the Qurʾān, and I had surpassed them by Sūrat al-Baqarah. The Prophet ﷺ said: “I have appointed you over your companions, though you are the youngest of them. When you lead people in prayer, lead them according to the weakest of them, for behind you are the old, the young, the weak, and the one with a need. When you are a tax collector, do not take the shāfiʿ — that is, the pregnant one — nor the rubbā, nor the ram of the flock. And the man’s prized possession is more entitled to it than you. Do not touch the Qurʾān unless you are pure. Know that ʿumrah is the lesser ḥajj, that an ʿumrah is better than this world and what is in it, and that a ḥajj is better than an ʿumrah.”
