حَدَّثَنَا سَهْلُ بْنُ مُوسَى ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى الصَّنْعَانِيُّ ثنا خَالِدُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ ثنا أَشْعَثُ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ حَمَلَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي الْعَاصِ نَاسًا فِي الْبَحْرِ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ عُمَرَ فَقَالَ

«حَمَلَ نَاسًا لَيْسَ بَيْنَهُمْ وَبَيْنَ الْمَاءِ إِلَّا الْأَلْوَاحَ وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَئِنْ هَلَكُوا أَوْ كَلِمَةٌ نَحْوَهَا لَآخُذَنَّ عِدَّتَهُمْ مِنْ ثَقِيفٍ»

Translation

✧ He carried people who had nothing between them and the water except the planks. By the One in whose hand is my soul, if they perish — or a word like that — I will certainly take their number from Thaqīf.
