✧ I was in Damascus in the time of 'Abd al-Malik. The heads of the Khawarij were brought and set up on wooden stakes. I came to see if I recognized anyone among them, and there was Abu Umamah near them. I approached him and looked at the stakes. He said: "Dogs of the Fire," three times. "The worst of those killed under the canopy of the sky, and those whom they killed are the best of those killed under the canopy of the sky." He said it three times. Then he wept. I said: O Abu Umamah, what makes you weep? They were upon our religion, then I remembered what they are heading to tomorrow. I said to him: Is this something you say by your own opinion, or something you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? He said: "If I had not heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ except once, or twice, or three times—up to seven—I would not have narrated it to you. Do you not recite this verse in Al 'Imran: {On the Day when some faces will turn white and some faces will turn black} to the end of the verse: {As for those whose faces turn white, they will be in the mercy of Allah, abiding eternally therein.}"
