حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ هِشَامِ بْنِ أَبِي الدُّمَيْكِ ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْمَدِينِيِّ ثنا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ حَدَّثَنِي حُصَيْنُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ سَعْدِ بْنِ مُعَاذٍ أَخُو بَنِي عَبْدِ الْأَشْهَلِ عَنْ مَحْمُودِ بْنِ لَبِيدٍ أَخِي بَنِي عَبْدِ الْأَشْهَلِ قَالَ لَمَّا قَدِمَ أَبُو الْحَيْسَرِ أَنَسُ بْنُ رَافِعٍ مَكَّةَ وَمَعَهُ فِتْيَةٌ مِنْ بَنِي عَبْدِ الْأَشْهَلِ فِيهِمْ إِيَاسُ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ يَلْتَمِسُونَ الْحِلْفَ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ عَلَى قَوْمِهِمْ مِنَ الْخَزْرَجِ

سَمِعَ بِهِمْ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَتَاهُمْ فَجَلَسَ إِلَيْهِمْ فَقَالَ «هَلْ لَكُمْ إِلَى خَيْرٍ مِمَّا جِئْتُمْ لَهُ؟» قَالُوا وَمَا ذَاكَ؟ قَالَ «أَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بَعَثَنِي إِلَى الْعِبَادِ أَدْعُوهُمْ إِلَى أَنْ يَعْبُدُوهُ وَلَا يُشْرِكُوا بِهِ شَيْئًا وَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ عَلَيَّ الْكِتَابَ» ثُمَّ شَرَعَ لَهُمُ الْإِسْلَامَ وَتَلَا عَلَيْهِمُ الْقُرْآنَ فَقَالَ إِيَاسُ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ وَكَانَ غُلَامًا حَدَثًا أَيْ قَوْمِي هَذَا وَاللهِ خَيْرٌ مِمَّا جِئْتُمْ لَهُ قَالَ فَأَخَذَ أَبُو الْحَيْسَرِ أَنَسُ بْنُ رَافِعٍ حِفْنَةً مِنَ الْبَطْحَاءِ فَضَرَبَ بِهَا فِي وَجْهِ إِيَاسٍ وَقَالَ دَعْنَا مِنْكَ فَلَعَمْرِي لَقَدْ جِئْنَا لِغَيْرِ هَذَا قَالَ فَصَمَتَ إِيَاسٌ وَقَامَ عَنْهُمْ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَانْصَرَفُوا إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ فَكَانَتْ وَقْعَةُ بُعَاثَ بَيْنَ الْأَوْسِ وَالْخَزْرَجِ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَلْبَثْ إِيَاسُ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ أَنْ هَلَكَ قَالَ مَحْمُودُ بْنُ لَبِيدٍ «فَأَخْبَرَنِي مَنْ حَضَرَهُ مِنْ قَوْمِهِ عِنْدَ مَوْتِهِ أَنَّهُمْ لَمْ يَزَالُوا يَسْمَعُونَهُ يُهَلِّلُ اللهَ وَيُكَبِّرُهُ وَيَحْمَدُهُ وَيُسَبِّحُهُ حَتَّى مَاتَ فَمَا كَانُوا يَشُكُّونَ أَنْ قَدْ مَاتَ مُسْلِمًا لَقَدْ كَانَ اسْتَشْعَرَ الْإِسْلَامَ فِي ذَلِكَ الْمَجْلِسِ حِينَ سَمِعَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مَا سَمِعَ»

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard of them and came to them and sat with them and said, “Would you like something better than what you came for?” They said, “And what is that?” He said, “I am the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He sent me to the servants to call them to worship Him and not associate anything with Him, and Allah sent down the Book to me.” Then he began to teach them Islam and recited the Qur'an to them. Iyas b. Mu'adh, who was a young boy, said, “O my people, this, by Allah, is better than what you came for.” He said: Then Abu al-Haysar Anas b. Rafi' took a handful of pebbles from the ground and threw it in the face of Iyas and said, “Leave us alone, for by my life we have come for something other than this.” He said: Iyas fell silent, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ got up and left them, and they returned to Madinah. Then the Battle of Bu'ath took place between the Aws and the Khazraj. Then Iyas b. Mu'adh did not remain long before he died. Mahmud b. Labid said: “One of his people who was present at his death informed me that they kept hearing him declaring the oneness of Allah, magnifying Him, praising Him, and glorifying Him until he died. They had no doubt that he had died a Muslim. He had embraced Islam in that gathering when he heard what he heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”
