حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحِنَّائِيُّ ثنا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ ثنا أَبِي ثنا أشعبُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ عَنْ أَبِي غَالِبٍ قَالَ
كُنْتُ بِدِمَشْقَ فَوْقَ ظَهْرِ بَيْتٍ فَمَرَّ بِي أَبُو أُمَامَةَ فَاتَّبَعْتُهُ فَإِذَا نَحْنُ برُءُوسِ الْخَوَارِجِ عَلَى دَرَجِ الْمَسْجِدِ مَنْصُوبَةً فَقَالَ «شَرُّ قَتْلَى تَحْتَ ظِلِّ السَّمَاءِ وَخَيْرُ قَتْلَى مَنْ قَتَلُوهُ» قُلْتُ أَنْتَ سَمِعْتَ هَذَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ «إِي وَرَبِّ الْكَعْبَةِ إِي وَرَبِّ الْكَعْبَةِ» مِرَارًا ثُمَّ بَكَى فَقُلْتُ أَتَبْكِي وَقَدْ قُلْتَ مَا قُلْتَ؟ قَالَ إِنِّي أَرْحَمُهُمْ قَوْمٌ أَرَادُوا شَيْئًا فَلَمْ يُصِيبُوهُ أَمَا إِنَّكَ بِأَرْضٍ هُمْ بِهَا كَثِيرٌ فَأَعَاذَكَ اللهُ مِنْهُ

✧ I was in Damascus on the roof of a house when Abu Umamah passed by me, so I followed him. Then we came upon the heads of the Khawarij set up on the steps of the mosque. He said: “The worst of those slain under the shade of the sky, and the best of those slain are those whom they killed.” I said: “Did you hear this from the Messenger of God ﷺ?” He said: “Yes, by the Lord of the Kaʿbah, yes, by the Lord of the Kaʿbah,” several times. Then he wept. I said: “Do you weep after what you said?” He said: “I have mercy on them. They are a people who wanted something but did not attain it. Indeed, you are in a land where they are many, so may God protect you from them.”
