✧ That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to his companions: "Shall I tell you about al-Khidr?" They said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "While he was walking one day in the market of the Children of Israel, a man who was a mukatab (a slave with a contract of manumission) saw him and said, 'Give me charity, may Allah bless you.' Al-Khidr said, 'I believe in Allah; whatever Allah wills of a matter will happen. I have nothing to give you.' The poor man said, 'I ask you by the face of Allah, why did you not give me charity? For I saw the mark of goodness in your face and hoped for blessing from you.' Al-Khidr said, 'I believe in Allah; I have nothing to give you except that you take me and sell me.' The poor man said, 'Is this possible?' He said, 'Yes, I speak the truth. You have asked me by a great matter. I will not disappoint you by the face of my Lord; sell me.' So he took him to the market and sold him for four hundred dirhams. He stayed with the buyer for a time, not using him for anything. Then he said to him, 'You bought me seeking good from me; so advise me of some work.' He said, 'I dislike to burden you, for you are an old, weak man.' He said, 'It does not burden me.' He said, 'Then get up and move these stones,' which would not be moved by fewer than six men in a day. The man went out for some need, then returned and found that he had moved the stones in an hour. He said, 'You have done well and excelled, and you were able to do what I did not think you could do.' Then a journey presented itself to the man, and he said, 'I consider you trustworthy, so be my deputy over my family with good deputation.' He said, 'Advise me of some work.' He said, 'I dislike to burden you.' He said, 'It does not burden me.' He said, 'Then make bricks for my house until I return to you.' The man went on his journey, and when he returned, he found that the building had been raised. He said, 'I ask you by the face of Allah, what is your way and what is your affair?' He said, 'You asked me by the face of Allah, and the face of Allah caused me to fall into servitude.' Al-Khidr said, 'I will tell you who I am. I am al-Khidr, of whom you have heard. A poor man asked me for charity, and I had nothing to give him. He asked me by the face of Allah, so I gave him possession of my neck, and he sold me. And I tell you that whoever is asked by the face of Allah and refuses the asker while able, he will stand on the Day of Resurrection with his skin but no flesh and no bone, rattling.' The man said, 'I believe in Allah; I have burdened you, O Prophet of Allah, and I did not know.' He said, 'No harm; you did well and kept me.' The man said, 'May my father and mother be your ransom, O Prophet of Allah; judge in my family and property as Allah shows you, or I give you the choice and free you.' He said, 'I would love for you to free me so that I may worship my Lord.' So he freed him. Al-Khidr said, 'Praise be to Allah who caused me to fall into servitude and then saved me from it.'"
