حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْمُعَلَّى الدِّمَشْقِيُّ وعَبْدَانُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ قَالَا ثنا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ ثنا مَسْلَمَةُ بْنُ عُلَيٍّ عَنِ الْأَوْزَاعِيِّ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ عَسَّالٍ قَالَ
حَضَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى طَلَبِ الْعِلْمِ قَبْلَ ذَهَابِهِ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ كَيْفَ يَذْهَبُ وَقَدْ تَعَلَّمْنَاهُ وَعَلَّمْنَاهُ أَبْنَاءَنَا؟ فَغَضِبَ وَقَالَ «أَوَلَيْسَ التَّوْرَاةُ وَالْإِنْجِيلُ فِي يَدِ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ فَهَلْ يُغْنِي عَنْهُمْ شَيْئًا؟»

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ urged the seeking of knowledge before its disappearance. A man said, “How will it disappear when we have learned it and taught it to our children?” He became angry and said, “Are not the Torah and the Gospel in the hands of the People of the Book? Does that avail them anything?”
