حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ ومُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ قَالَا ثنا شَيْبَانُ بْنُ فَرُّوخٍ ثنا الصَّعْقُ بْنُ حَزْنٍ ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحَكَمِ الْبُنَانِيُّ عَنِ الْمِنْهَالِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو عَنْ زِرِّ بْنِ حُبَيْشٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ؓ قَالَ حَدَّثَ صَفْوَانُ بْنُ عَسَّالٍ الْمُرَادِيُّ قَالَ

أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ مُتَّكِئٌ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ عَلَى بُرْدٍ لَهُ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي جِئْتُ أَطْلُبُ الْعِلْمَ فَقَالَ «مَرْحَبًا بطالبِ الْعِلْمِ طَالِبُ الْعِلْمِ لَتَحُفُّهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَتُظِلُّهُ بِأَجْنِحَتِهَا ثُمَّ يَرْكَبُ بَعْضُهُ بَعْضًا حَتَّى يَبْلُغُوا السَّمَاءَ الدُّنْيَا مِنْ حُبِّهِمْ لِمَا يَطْلُبُ فَمَا جِئْتَ تَطْلُبُ؟» قَالَ قَالَ صَفْوَانُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ لَا نَزَالُ نُسَافِرُ بَيْنَ مَكَّةَ وَالْمَدِينَةِ فَأَفْتِنَا عَنِ الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «ثَلَاثَةُ أَيَّامٍ لِلْمُسَافِرِ وَيَوْمٌ وَلَيْلَةٌ لِلْمُقِيمِ»

✧ I came to the Messenger of God ﷺ while he was reclining in the mosque on a cloak of his, and I said to him: 'O Messenger of God, I have come seeking knowledge.' He said: «Welcome to the seeker of knowledge. The seeker of knowledge—the angels cover him and shade him with their wings, then they climb one upon another until they reach the lowest heaven, out of love for what he seeks. What have you come to seek?» He said: Safwan said: 'O Messenger of God, we do not cease traveling between Makkah and Madinah, so give us a ruling about wiping over the leather socks.' The Messenger of God ﷺ said to him: «Three days for the traveler, and a day and a night for the resident.»
