حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ الْجَوْهَرِيُّ ثنا عَفَّانُ وَحَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ ثنا هُدْبَةُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ قَالَا ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ الْفَضْلُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ الْجُمَحِيُّ ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى الطَّوِيلُ أنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنِ الْأَشْعَثِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ سَمُرَةَ بْنِ جُنْدُبٍ أَنَّ رَجُلًا قَالَ
يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ رَأَيْتُ كَأَنَّ «دَلْوًا دُلِّيَتْ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ فَجَاءَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ فَأَخَذَ بِعَرَاقِيبِهَا فَشَرِبَ شُرْبًا ضَعِيفًا ثُمَّ جَاءَ عُمَرُ ؓ فَأَخَذَ بِعَرَاقِيبِهَا حَتَّى تَضَلَّعَ ثُمَّ جَاءَ عُثْمَانُ ؓ فَأَخَذَ بِعَرَاقِيبِهَا فَشَرِبَ حَتَّى تَضَلَّعَ ثُمَّ جَاءَ عَلِيٌّ ؓ فَأَخَذَ بِعَرَاقِيبِهَا فَاشْتَطَّتْ مِنْهُ وَانْتَضَحَ»

✧ "O Messenger of God, I saw as if a bucket was lowered from the sky. Abu Bakr ؓ came and took hold of its rope, and drank a weak drink. Then Umar ؓ came and took hold of its rope until he was filled. Then Uthman ؓ came and took hold of its rope and drank until he was filled. Then Ali ؓ came and took hold of its rope, but it slipped from him and spilled on him."
