✧ He informed him that when the Messenger of God ﷺ left Makkah as an emigrant to Madinah, Quraysh set a reward of one hundred camels for whoever brought him back to them. He said: While I was sitting in the gathering of my people, a man from among us came and said: By God, I have just seen a group of three riders pass by me; I think it is Muhammad. He said: I signaled to him to be quiet and said: They are only the sons of so-and-so, looking for a lost camel of theirs. He said: Perhaps; then he fell silent. I remained for a little while, then I got up and ordered my horse to be brought to the bottom of the valley. I took out my weapons from behind my room, then I took my divination arrows which I used for seeking omens. Then I put on my armor, then I took out my arrows and cast them, and the one I disliked came out - it does not harm him. I had been hoping to capture him and take the hundred camels. So I rode in pursuit of them. While my horse was galloping with me, it stumbled and I fell off. I took out my arrows and cast them, and the arrow I disliked came out - it does not harm him. But I refused to do anything but continue following him, so I mounted again. When the group appeared to me and I looked at them, my horse stumbled with me, and its forelegs sank into the ground, and I fell off. Then it pulled out its leg, and smoke followed it like thick dust. I knew that he had been protected from me and that he would prevail. So I called out to them: "Wait for me, for by God, I will not trouble you, and nothing you dislike will come from me." The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Tell him: What does he seek?" I said: "Write for me a document between me and you as a sign." He said: "Write, O Abu Bakr." He said: So he wrote for me, then he threw it to me, and I returned. I kept silent and did not mention anything of what had happened, until God granted His Messenger victory over Makkah and he finished with the people of Hunayn. Then I went out to the Messenger of God ﷺ with the document he had written for me. He said: While I was heading toward him, I entered amidst a battalion of the Ansar, and they began to strike me with their spears and say: "Get away, get away." When I drew near to the Messenger of God ﷺ upon his she-camel, I looked at his shins in the stirrup as if they were the trunk of a palm tree. I reached out my hand with the document and said: O Messenger of God, this is your document. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "A day of fulfillment and kindness, come closer." Then I embraced Islam.
