✧ Salama b. Nubayṭ narrated to us, from Nuʿaym b. Abī Hind, from Nubayṭ b. Shurayṭ, from Sālim b. ʿUbayd, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ fell unconscious during his illness, then regained consciousness and said: "Has the prayer come?" I said: Yes. He said: "Tell Bilāl to call the adhan and tell Abū Bakr to lead the people in prayer." ʿĀʾisha ؓ said: My father is a tender-hearted man. If only you would order someone else to lead the people in prayer. Then he fell unconscious, then regained consciousness and said: "Has the prayer come?" I said: Yes. He said: "Tell Bilāl to call the adhan and tell Abū Bakr to lead the people in prayer." ʿĀʾisha said: My father is a tender-hearted man. If only you would order someone else to lead the people in prayer. Then he fell unconscious, then regained consciousness and said: "Has the prayer been established?" I said: Yes. He said: "Bring me a person to lean on." Burayda and another man came, and he leaned on them. He came to the mosque and entered while Abū Bakr ؓ was standing leading the people in prayer. Abū Bakr started to step back, but the Messenger of God ﷺ prevented him. He was seated beside Abū Bakr ؓ until he finished his prayer. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ passed away. ʿUmar ؓ said: I will not hear any man say that the Messenger of God ﷺ has died except that I will strike him with the sword. He took my arm and leaned on me, and he walked until we came. He said: Make room. They made room for him. He leaned over him and touched him and said: {Indeed, you are to die, and indeed they are to die.} They said: O companion of the Messenger of God, has the Messenger of God died? He said: Yes. So they knew it was as he said. They said: O companion of the Messenger of God, shall we pray over the Messenger of God ﷺ? He said: Yes. They said: How shall we pray over him? He said: A group enters and says takbir and supplicates and prays, then leaves, and others come, until they finish. They said: O companion of the Messenger of God, shall the Messenger of God ﷺ be buried? He said: Yes. They said: And where shall he be buried? He said: Where he passed away, for God Almighty did not take him except in a good spot. So they knew it was as he said. Then he stood and said: Your companion is with you. He ordered them to wash him. Then he went out, and the Muhājirūn gathered to consult. They said: Go to our brothers from the Anṣār, for they have a share in this matter. They went, and a man from the Anṣār said: From us an emir and from you an emir. ʿUmar took the hand of Abū Bakr ؓ and said: Tell me, who has these three: {Second of two when they were in the cave} – who are the two? {When he said to his companion: Do not grieve} – who is his companion? {Indeed, God is with us.} He took the hand of Abū Bakr ؓ and struck it, and said to the people: Pledge allegiance to him. So they pledged allegiance to him with a good and beautiful pledge.
