حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ثنا عَمِّي أَبُو بَكْرٍ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ إِدْرِيسَ عَنْ لَيْثٍ عَنْ مَعْرُوفِ بْنِ أَبِي مَعْرُوفٍ الْمَوْصِلِيِّ قَالَ

لَمَّا أُصِيبَ عُمَرُ ؓ سَمِعْتُ صَوْتًا لِيَبْكِ عَلَى الْإِسْلَامِ مَنْ كَانَ بَاكِيًا فَقَدْ أوْشَكُوا هَلْكَى وَمَا قَدِمَ الْعَهْدُ وَأَدْبَرَتِ الدُّنْيَا وَأَدْبَرَ خَيْرُهَا وَقَدْ مَلَّها مَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِالْوَعْدِ

✧ When Umar ؓ was struck, I heard a voice: “Let him weep for Islam who would weep; they have nearly perished. The covenant has not arrived, and the world has turned its back, and its good has turned away; those who believed in the promise have grown weary of it.”
