✧ I heard al-Hasan say: The nobles of Quraysh gathered at the door of Umar ؓ, among them al-Harith b. Hisham, Abu Sufyan b. Harb, and Suhail b. Amr. Meanwhile, those slaves and freedmen from the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ [were also present]. His permission came out, and he gave permission to Bilal, Suhaib, and their like, and left the others. Abu Sufyan said: 'I have never seen [anything] like today; he gave permission to these slaves and left us sitting at his door without granting us permission.' Suhail b. Amr, who was a wise man, said: 'O people, by God, I see what is in your faces. If you are angry, then be angry with yourselves. The people were called and you were called; they hastened and you delayed. By God, what they preceded you to of virtue is more severely missed by you than this door of yours over which you competed.' Al-Hasan said: 'God does not make a servant who hastens to Him like a servant who delays from Him.'
