حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثنا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ الْمِنْهَالِ ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أَتَى بَنِي عَمْرِو بْنِ عَوْفٍ فِي لِحَاءٍ كَانَ بَيْنَهُمْ فَحَضَرَتْ صَلَاةُ الْعَصْرِ فَقَالَ بِلَالٌ أُقِيمُ يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ وَتُصَلِّي بِالنَّاسِ فَأَقَامَ بِلَالٌ وَتَقَدَّمَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ فَصَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ فَجَاءَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَخْرِقُ الصُّفُوفَ فَصَفَّحَ النَّاسُ وَكَانَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ لَا يَكَادُ يَلْتَفِتُ فِي صَلَاتِهِ فَأَكْثَرَ الْقَوْمُ التَّصْفِيحَ فَالْتَفَتَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَإِذَا هُوَ بِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يَخْرِقُ الصُّفُوفَ فَتَأَخَّرَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَنْ مَكَانَكَ فَتَأَخَّرَ وَتَقَدَّمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَصَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ فَلَمَّا قَضَى صَلَاتَهُ قَالَ «يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ مَا لَكَ حِينَ أَوْمَأْتُ إِلَيْكَ أَقِمْ مَكَانَكَ لَمْ تَقُمْ؟» قَالَ مَا كَانَ لِابْنِ أَبِي قُحَافَةَ أَنْ يَؤُمَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ قَالَ لِلْقَوْمِ «مَا لَكُمْ إِذَا نَابَكُمْ أَمْرٌ صَفَّحْتُمْ؟ سَبِّحُوا إِنَّمَا التَّصْفِيحُ لِلنِّسَاءِ»

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ came to Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf concerning a dispute that was between them. The time for the ʿAṣr prayer came, so Bilāl said, 'Shall I call the iqāmah, O Abū Bakr, and you lead the people in prayer?' Bilāl called the iqāmah, and Abū Bakr ؓ stepped forward and led the people in prayer. The Messenger of God ﷺ came, making his way through the rows, and the people clapped. Abū Bakr would hardly turn around in his prayer, but the people clapped a lot, so Abū Bakr turned around and saw the Messenger of God ﷺ making his way through the rows. Abū Bakr stepped back, but the Prophet ﷺ gestured to him, 'Stay where you are.' He stepped back, and the Messenger of God ﷺ came forward and led the people in prayer. When he finished his prayer, he said, 'O Abū Bakr, what was the matter with you that when I gestured to you to stay in your place, you did not stay?' He said, 'It was not for the son of Abū Quḥāfah to lead the Messenger of God ﷺ in prayer.' Then he said to the people, 'What is the matter with you that when something happens you clap? Glorify; clapping is only for women.'
