حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدُوسِ بْنِ كَامِلٍ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ الرَّازِيُّ قَالَا ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْجَعْدِ ثنا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ النُّعْمَانِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ قَالَ

سَمِعْتُ أَوْسَ بْنَ أَوْسٍ الثَّقَفِيَّ يَقُولُ أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فِي وَفْدِ ثَقِيفٍ قَالَ وَكُنْتُ فِي أَسْفَلِ الْقِبْلَةِ لَيْسَ فِيهَا أَحَدٌ إِلَّا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ نَائِمٌ إِذْ أَتَاهُ رَجُلٌ فَسَارَّهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ «اذْهَبْ فَاقْتُلْهُ» ثُمَّ قَالَ «أَلَيْسَ يَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَيَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللهِ؟» قَالَ بَلَى قَالَ إِنِّي أُمِرْتُ أَنْ أُقَاتِلَ النَّاسَ حَتَّى يَقُولُوا لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ فَإِذَا قَالُوا حُرِّمَتْ عَلَيَّ دِمَاؤُهُمْ وَأَمْوَالُهُمْ إِلَّا بِحَقِّهَا

Translation

✧ I heard Aws b. Aws al-Thaqafi say: I came to the Prophet ﷺ in the delegation of Thaqif. He said: I was at the lower part of the qiblah, in which there was no one except the Prophet ﷺ sleeping, when a man came to him and whispered to him. Then he said: “Go and kill him.” Then he said: “Does he not testify that there is no god but Allah and testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah?” He said: Yes. He said: “I have been commanded to fight the people until they say there is no god but Allah. When they say it, their blood and their wealth become forbidden to me, except by its right.”
