حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ الْمَلْطِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ مُجَمِّعٍ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ زُهَيْرٍ التُّسْتَرِيُّ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ كَرَامَةَ ثنا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُوسَى عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ يَعْنِي ابْنَ مُجَمِّعٍ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ قَالَ جَاءَ عُوَيْمِرٌ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ مِنْ بَنِي الْعَجْلَانِ إِلَى عَاصِمِ بْنِ عَدِيٍّ فَقَالَ

سَلِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أَرَأَيْتَ رَجُلًا وَجَدَ مَعَ امْرَأَتِهِ رَجُلًا فَقَتَلَهُ أَتَقْتُلُونَهُ أَمْ كَيْفَ يَصْنَعُ؟ فَلَبِثَ الرَّجُلُ شَيْئًا ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَقَالَ يَا عَاصِمُ مَا صَنَعْتَ فِيمَا قُلْتُ؟ فَقَالَ عَاصِمٌ إِنَّكَ لَمْ تَأْتِنِي بِخَيْرٍ قَطُّ سَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَعَابَ الْمَسَائِلَ فَلَمْ تُقِرَّهُ نَفْسُهُ حَتَّى جَاءَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ لَهُ مِثْلَ مَا قَالَ لِعَاصِمٍ فَقَالَ «تَعَالَ فَقَدْ أَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ فِيكَ وَفِي صَاحِبَتِكَ» فَدَعَاهُمَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَلَاعَنَ بَيْنَهُمَا فَقَالَ عُوَيْمِرٌ يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ كَذَبْتُ عَلَيْهَا إِنْ أَمْسَكْتُهَا بَعْدَ أَنْ لَاعَنْتُهَا فَجَرَتِ السُّنَّةُ بَيْنَ الْمُتَلَاعِنَيْنِ فِي أَنْ يُفَرَّقَ بَيْنَهُمَا

✧ Ask the Prophet ﷺ: What do you think about a man who finds another man with his wife and kills him—will you kill him in retribution, or what should he do? The man waited a while, then came and said, “O ‘Āṣim, what did you do about what I told you?” ‘Āṣim replied, “You never brought me anything good. I asked the Prophet ﷺ and he disapproved of such questions.” ‘Uwaymir was not satisfied until he went to the Messenger of God ﷺ and asked him the same as he had asked ‘Āṣim. The Prophet ﷺ said, “Come forward, for God, exalted is He, has revealed something concerning you and your wife.” The Messenger of God ﷺ summoned them both and conducted the li‘ān between them. Then ‘Uwaymir said, “O Prophet of God, I have lied against her if I keep her after having performed li‘ān.” Thus the sunnah was established between the two parties of li‘ān that they be separated.
