✧ By Allah, never have I seen, as on this day, nor the skin of a secluded maiden. So Sahl was struck down. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was brought, and it was said, "O Messenger of Allah, will you attend to Sahl b. Ḥunayf? By Allah, he cannot raise his head." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do you suspect anyone in this?" They said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah, ʿĀmir b. Rabīʿah passed by him while he was washing himself and said, 'By Allah, never have I seen, as on this day, ever, nor the skin of a secluded maiden.'" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ summoned ʿĀmir b. Rabīʿah, became angry with him, and said, "For what reason does one of you kill his brother? If you do not invoke blessing, wash for him." So ʿĀmir washed for him, and Sahl departed with the riding party. Ibn Shihāb said: The washing that we found our scholars practicing is that a man is brought to the one who helps his companion, with a bowl containing water, and he holds it raised from the ground. The one who helps inserts his right hand into the water and pours it over his face, one pour into the bowl. Then he inserts his left hand into the water and washes his right hand, one pour into the bowl. Then he inserts his right hand and washes his left hand, one pour up to the elbows. Then he inserts both hands into the water and washes his chest, one pour into the bowl. Then he inserts his left hand, scoops water, and pours it over the back of his right palm, one pour into the bowl. Then he inserts his left hand and pours it over the elbow of his right hand, one pour into the bowl, while it is in his hand up to his neck. Then he does the like of that with the elbow of his left hand. Then he does the like of that with the back of his right foot, from the bases of the toes, and the left similarly. Then he inserts his left hand and pours it over the back of his right knee. Then he does with the left the like of that. Then he immerses the inner side of his right waist-wrapper. Then the one in whose hand is the bowl stands up with the bowl and pours it over the back of his right knee. Then the one in whose hand is the bowl stands up with the bowl and pours it over the head of the afflicted one from behind him. Then he turns the bowl over onto the face of the ground from behind him.
