✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered the collection of charity, and a man brought clusters of this sakhil (inferior dates) and put them down. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out and said, "Who brought this?" For whenever anyone came, he would pour out what he had brought. Then the verse was revealed: {O you who have believed, spend from the good things which you have earned and from that which We have produced for you from the earth. And do not aim toward the defective therefrom, spending [from that]} (2:267). On that day he also forbade taking al-Juʿrūr and the kind called Ibn al-Ḥubayq in charity. Al-Zuhrī said: "They are two kinds of dates of Madinah." ʿAbbād said: Sufyān said: "Al-sakhil is al-shīṣ (worthless dates)."
