حَدَّثَنَا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ الْأَسْفَاطِيُّ ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أَبِي أُوَيْسٍ حَدَّثَنِي أَخِي عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ بِلَالٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أَبِي عَتِيقٍ وَمُوسَى بْنِ عُقْبَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ أَخْبَرَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْعَاصِ قَالَ

اسْتَأْذَنَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَهُوَ مُضْطَجِعٌ عَلَى فِرَاشِهِ لَابِسٌ مِرْطَ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَأَذِنَ لِأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَهُوَ كَذَلِكَ ثُمَّ قَضَى إِلَيْهِ حَاجَتَهُ ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ ثُمَّ اسْتَأْذَنَ عُمَرُ فَأَذِنَ لَهُ وَهُوَ عَلَى ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ قَضَى إِلَيْهِ حَاجَتَهُ ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ قَالَ عُثْمَانُ ثُمَّ اسْتَأْذَنْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَجَلَسَ فَجَمَعَ عَلَيْهِ ثِيَابَهُ فَقَضَيْتُ إِلَيْهِ حَاجَتِي ثُمَّ انْصَرَفْتُ فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا لَكَ لَمْ تَفْزَعْ لِأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ كَمَا فَزِعْتَ لِعُثْمَانَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «عُثْمَانُ رَجُلٌ حَيِيٌّ وَخَشِيتُ إِنْ أَذِنْتُ لَهُ وَأَنَا عَلَى حَالَتِي تِلْكَ أَنْ لَا يَبْلُغَ فِي حَاجَتَهِ»

✧ Abu Bakr ؓ asked permission to enter upon the Prophet ﷺ while he was lying down on his bed wearing 'A'ishah's cloak—she was the wife of the Prophet ﷺ. He granted Abu Bakr permission while he was in that state. Then [Abu Bakr] brought his need to him, then departed. Then 'Umar asked permission, and he granted him permission while he was in that state. Then he brought his need to him, then departed. 'Uthman said: Then I asked permission to enter upon him, and he sat up and gathered his garments about him. I brought my need to him, then departed. 'A'ishah said, 'O Messenger of God, why did you not sit up for Abu Bakr and 'Umar as you sat up for 'Uthman?' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Uthman is a bashful man, and I feared that if I granted him permission while I was in that state, he would not fully present his need.'
