✧ He had a store of dates that was decreasing, so he guarded it one night and found an animal resembling a young man who had reached puberty. He greeted it and it returned the greeting. He said, “Are you a jinn or a human?” It said, “No, rather a jinn.” He said, “Then give me your hand.” It gave him its hand, and its hand was like a dog’s paw and its hair was like a dog’s hair. He said, “This is how the jinn are created.” It said, “The jinn know that there is no man among them stronger than me.” He said, “Then what brought you here?” It said, “It reached us that you love charity, so we came to get some of your food.” He said, “Then what protects us from you?” It said, “This verse in Surat al-Baqarah: {Allah—there is no god but He, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer}. Whoever says it in the evening is protected from us until morning, and whoever says it in the morning is protected from us until evening.” When morning came, he went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned that to him, and he said, “The evil one told the truth.”
