حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الدَّبَرِيُّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّزَّاقِ عَنِ الثَّوْرِيِّ عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ الطَّوِيلِ قَالَ

سَمِعْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ يَقُولُ قَدِمَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ الْمَدِينَةَ فَآخَى النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ سَعْدِ بْنِ الرَّبِيعِ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ فَعَرَضَ عَلَيْهِ سَعْدٌ أَنْ يُنَاصِفَهُ أَهْلَهُ وَمَالَهُ وَكَانَ لَهُ امْرَأَتَانِ فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بَارَكَ اللهُ لَكَ فِي أَهْلِكَ وَمَالِكَ دُلُّونِي عَلَى السُّوقِ قَالَ فَأَتَى السُّوقَ فَرَبِحَ شَيْئًا مِنْ أَقِطٍ مِنْ سَمْنٍ فَرَآهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بَعْدَ أَيَّامٍ وَعَلَيْهِ وَضَرٌ مِنْ صُفْرَةٍ فَقَالَ «مَهْيَمْ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ» قَالَ تَزَوَّجْتُ امْرَأَةً مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ قَالَ «مَا سُقْتَ إِلَيْهَا» قَالَ وَزْنَ نَوَاةٍ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ قَالَ «أَوْلِمْ وَلَوْ بِشَاةٍ»

✧ I heard Anas b. Mālik say: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf came to Madinah, and the Prophet ﷺ established brotherhood between him and Saʿd b. al-Rabīʿ al-Anṣārī. Saʿd offered to share half of his family and wealth with him, and he had two wives. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said to him: “May Allah bless you in your family and wealth. Show me the market.” He went to the market and earned some profit from aqit (dried curd) and ghee. The Prophet ﷺ saw him after some days with a trace of yellow perfume on him and said: “Mahyam, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān?” He said: “I married a woman from the Anṣār.” He said: “What did you give her as a dowry?” He said: “The weight of a date stone of gold.” He said: “Hold a wedding feast, even if with one sheep.”
