حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ وَأَبُو مُسْلِمٍ الْكَشِّيُّ قَالَا ثنا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ الْمِنْهَالِ ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ عَلْقَمَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ عَلْقَمَةَ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ
لَمَّا مَاتَ سَعْدُ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ بَكَى أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَبَكَى عُمَرُ ؓ حَتَّى عُرِفَ بُكَاءُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ مِنْ بُكَاءِ عُمَرَ وَبُكَاءُ عُمَرَ مِنْ بُكَاءِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ فَقُلْتُ لِعَائِشَةَ هَلْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَبْكِي؟ قَالَتْ «لَا لَكِنَّهُ كَانَ يَقْبِضُ عَلَى لِحْيَتِهِ ﷺ»

✧ When Sa'd b. Mu'adh died, Abu Bakr wept and 'Umar ؓ wept, until Abu Bakr's weeping could be distinguished from 'Umar's weeping, and 'Umar's weeping from Abu Bakr's. I said to 'A'ishah, 'Did the Messenger of God ﷺ weep?' She said, 'No, but he would clutch his beard ﷺ.'
