✧ And he ﷺ remained with Banu Qurayzah until they asked him to appoint an arbiter between him and them, upon whose ruling they would submit. The Messenger of God ﷺ said, 'Choose whomever you wish from my Companions, so that we may listen to his word.' They chose Sa'd b. Mu'adh, and the Messenger of God ﷺ approved of him, and they surrendered. The Messenger of God ﷺ commanded that their weapons be placed in a house, and he commanded that they be bound and fettered, so they were placed in the house of Usamah b. Zayd. The Messenger of God ﷺ sent for Sa'd b. Mu'adh, and he came on a Bedouin's donkey, whose saddle pad they claim was of palm fiber. A man from Banu 'Abd al-Ashhal followed him, walking with him, exalting the rights of Banu Qurayzah, mentioning their alliance and what they had endured on the day of Bu'ath, and that they had chosen him over anyone else hoping for his compassion and tenderness toward them: 'So spare them, for they are an adornment and a number for you.' He said: That man spoke at length, but Sa'd did not respond to him at all until they drew near. Then the man said to him, 'Will you not reply to me with anything?' Sa'd said, 'By God, in God's cause I do not care about the blame of any blamer.' So the man left him and went to his people, having despaired of their being spared, and informed them of what he had said to him and what he had replied. Sa'd went on until he came to the Messenger of God ﷺ, who said, 'O Sa'd, judge between us and them.' Sa'd ؓ said, 'I judge concerning them that their fighting men be killed, their captives be taken as spoils, their wealth be seized, and their women and children be taken captive.' The Messenger of God ﷺ said, 'Sa'd b. Mu'adh has judged among them with the judgment of God.' Some people claim that they submitted to the judgment of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and the Messenger of God ﷺ referred the judgment concerning them to Sa'd b. Mu'adh. They were brought out group by group, and their necks were struck. Huyayy b. Akhtab was brought out, and the Messenger of God ﷺ said to him, 'Has God disgraced you?' He said, 'You have prevailed over me, and I do not blame myself regarding you.' The Messenger of God ﷺ commanded, and he was taken out to the stones of the oil market, and his neck was struck—all of that before the eyes of Sa'd b. Mu'adh. They claim that Sa'd's wound had healed and closed with scar tissue over the healing. Then he supplicated, saying, 'O God, Lord of the heavens and the earth: there was no people on earth more hateful to me than a people who denied Your Messenger and expelled him. I think that You have ended the war between us and them. If there remains between us and them any fighting, then keep me alive to fight them for Your sake; and if You have ended the war between us and them, then open this place and make my death therein.' God, Blessed and Exalted, opened it, and indeed he lay down in the middle of the night, and they did not realize it until he died. And the wound did not cease flowing until he died, may God have mercy on him.
