حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ مُوسَى ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ السَّيْلَحِينِيُّ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ التَّمَّارُ الْبَصْرِيُّ ثنا عِيسَى بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْبِرَكِيُّ قَالَا ثنا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ ثنا الْأَعْمَشُ عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ عَنْ زِيَادِ بْنِ لَبِيدٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ قَالَ
أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ وَهُوَ يُحَدِّثُ أَصْحَابَهُ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ «كَيْفَ وَقَدْ ذَهَبَ أَوَانُ الْعِلْمِ» قُلْتُ بِأَبِي وَأُمِّي كَيْفَ يَذْهَبُ أَوَانُ الْعِلْمِ وَنَحْنُ نَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ ونُعَلِّمُهُ أَبْنَاءَنَا وَيُعَلِّمُهُ أَبْنَاؤُنَا أَبْنَاءَهُمْ إِلَى أَنْ تَقُومَ السَّاعَةُ؟ قَالَ «ثَكِلَتْكَ أُمُّكَ يَا ابْنَ لَبِيدٍ إِنْ كُنْتُ لَأَرَاكَ مِنْ أَفْقَهِ أَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ أَوَلَيْسَ الْيَهُودُ وَالنَّصَارَى يَقْرَءُونَ التَّوْرَاةَ وَالْإِنْجِيلَ ثُمَّ لَا يَنْتَفِعُونَ مِنْهَا بِشَيْءٍ؟»

✧ I came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was speaking to his companions, saying: “How will it be when the time of knowledge has departed?” I said: “May my father and mother be your ransom, how will the time of knowledge depart while we recite the Qur’an, teach it to our sons, and our sons will teach it to their sons until the Hour arises?” He said: “May your mother be bereaved of you, O Ibn Labid! I used to consider you among the most understanding of the people of Madinah. Do not the Jews and Christians recite the Torah and the Gospel, yet they do not benefit from them in anything?”
