✧ I entered upon the Messenger of God ﷺ in the mosque of Madinah, and he began to say: 'Where is so-and-so, son of so-and-so?' He did not cease to notice their absence and send for them until they had gathered before him. Then he said: 'I am going to tell you a hadith, so memorize it, understand it, and relate it to those after you: God has chosen a creation from His creation.' Then he recited this verse: {God chooses from the angels messengers and from the people} 'a creation whom He will admit to Paradise. I am chosen from among you; whoever I wish to choose, I choose, and I make brotherhood among you just as God made brotherhood among the angels. Rise, O Abu Bakr.' He rose and knelt before him. He said: 'You have a hand with me that God will reward you for. If I were to take a close friend, I would have taken you as a close friend. You are to me like my shirt to my body.' And he moved his shirt with his hand. Then he said: 'Come close, O 'Umar.' He came close. He said: 'You were harsh in your opposition to us, Abu Hafs. I called upon God to strengthen the religion through you or through Abu Jahl, and God did that through you. You are the more beloved of the two to me, and you will be with me in Paradise, the third of three of this ummah.' Then he stepped aside and made him a brother with Abu Bakr. Then he called 'Uthman and said: 'Come close, O 'Uthman. Come close, O 'Uthman.' He kept drawing near until he touched his knee to the knee of the Messenger of God ﷺ. Then he looked at him, then looked at the sky and said: 'Glory be to God, the Magnificent' three times. Then he looked at 'Uthman, and his buttons were undone, so the Messenger of God ﷺ buttoned them with his hand. Then he said: 'Gather the two ends of your cloak over your chest, for you will have an affair among the people of heaven. You are among those who will come to me at the cistern with his jugular veins gushing blood, and I will say: Who did this to you? You will say: So-and-so and so-and-so. That is the speech of Gabriel ﷺ, when he called from heaven: Verily 'Uthman is trustworthy over every one who is forsaken.' Then he called 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf and said: 'Come close, O trusted one of God, the trusted one in heaven. God will give you power over your wealth with truth. Verily you have a supplication with me, and I have delayed it.' He said: 'Choose for me, O Messenger of God.' He said: 'You have burdened me, O 'Abd al-Rahman, with a trust. May God increase your wealth.' He said: And he began to move his hand. Then he stepped aside and made him a brother with 'Uthman. Then Talha and al-Zubayr entered, and he said: 'Come close to me.' They came close. He said: 'You two are my disciples, like the disciples of Jesus son of Mary ﷺ.' Then he made brotherhood between them. Then he called Sa'd b. Abi Waqqas and 'Ammar b. Yasir and said: 'O 'Ammar, you will be killed by the rebellious faction.' Then he made brotherhood between them. Then he called 'Uwaymir Abu al-Darda' and Salman al-Farisi and said: 'O Salman, you are from us, the People of the House. God has given you the first knowledge and the last knowledge, the first book and the last book.' Then he said: 'Shall I direct you, O Abu al-Darda'?' He said: 'Yes, may my father and mother be ransom for you, O Messenger of God.' He said: 'That you rescue them, they would rescue you; if you leave them, they will not leave you; if you flee from them, they will catch you. So lend them your honor for the day of your poverty.' Then he made brotherhood between them. Then he looked at the faces of his companions and said: 'Rejoice and be comforted, for you are the first to come to me at the cistern, and you will be in the highest chambers.' Then he looked at 'Abd Allah b. 'Umar and said: 'Praise be to God who guides from misguidance.' Then 'Ali said: 'O Messenger of God, my spirit has departed and my back has broken when I saw you do what you did with your companions other than me. If it is from displeasure with me, then to you belongs the right to be pleased and honor.' He said: 'By the One who sent me with the truth, I did not delay you except for myself. You are to me in the position of Aaron to Moses, and you are my heir.' He said: 'O Messenger of God, what do I inherit from you?' He said: 'What the prophets inherited.' He said: 'And what did the prophets inherit before you?' He said: 'The Book of God and the sunnah of their prophet. And you will be with me in my palace in Paradise, with Fatimah my daughter, and my companion.' Then the Messenger of God ﷺ recited the verse: {Brothers on couches, facing one another} 'the beloved friends in God, looking at each other.'
